Image Converter (AVIF/WebP)

The Image Converter transforms uploaded images into modern formats to reduce file size and improve load times. It also manages bulk optimization for existing media and can serve the best format automatically to supported browsers.

Where to configure

  1. Open ZiziCache → Images.
  2. Stay in the Image Converter tab.
  3. Enable the converter and configure settings.

Server Environment & Diagnostics

  • Shows status of GD and ImageMagick extensions.
  • Checks WebP and AVIF support.
  • Run Full Diagnostics provides detailed capability checks.

Statistics

  • Total Images — all supported files on disk.
  • Breakdown of Original, Thumbnails, WebP, and AVIF files.
  • Refresh Statistics updates counts and percentages.

Bulk Optimization

Convert existing media in bulk:

  • Start Bulk Optimization for initial runs.
  • Progress view shows Completed, Remaining, Failed, and Skipped.
  • Controls for Stop, Resume, and Clear Progress.
  • Displays format counts (WebP/AVIF) and savings when available.

Converter Settings

  • Enable Image Converter — master switch for conversion features.
  • Output Formats
    • WebP — good compression (~25% smaller), wide browser support.
    • AVIF — best compression (~50% smaller), requires PHP 8.1+ and AVIF support.
  • WebP Quality / AVIF Quality — balance size and visual quality.
  • Max Width (px) / Max Height (px) — resize on conversion (0 = no limit).
  • Keep Original Files — preserve originals after conversion.
  • Automatic Frontend Serving — serves the best format based on browser support (AVIF → WebP → Original).

Original File Cleanup

If you disable Keep Original Files, ZiziCache can remove originals after successful conversion. A warning is shown with a Start Bulk Original Cleanup button.

Format compatibility notes

  • WebP is broadly compatible (recommended for most sites).
  • AVIF provides smaller files but has limitations for some external platforms (e.g., social media or merchant feeds). Use carefully where those platforms are critical.

FTP Upload Support

Images uploaded via FTP to /wp-content/uploads/ are automatically detected and added to the Media Library when you visit Media. This supports all configured conversion formats.

Benefits

  • Smaller images and faster page loads.
  • Reduced bandwidth usage.
  • Automatic delivery of the best format per browser.
  • Full control over quality and max dimensions.
